Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia - Shopping Trip - Day 1

Finally back from my Kuala Lumpur shopping trip from 29th ~ 31 May 09. Thus this explains the absence of the posts this few days~

Why Kuala Lumpur, because everything was on discount...!
Went there by tiger airways which offered the cheap airfares. Paid S$80 for round trip from Singapore inclusive of all airport sucharges and taxes!
Cheap?

And stay for 2 nights at Novotel KL for RM400. Cheap?
S$100 = RM 240

Total fixed expenditure : S$247 /pax
considering that we are flying and are staying at novotel, the price is a steal!

Credit to my uncle for spotting this offer!

Day 1 was eating at a Bak Ku teh store which i forgot the name~ with its extremely tender pork foot, 猪脚, for late lunch. Late lunch was due to unexpected heavy traffic on a friday afternoon in KL. The famous peak hour friday jam, i experienced it before. Its much worse than Singapore's infamous PIE peak hour jam.
Seems like that the store was pretty famous with various pics of the owners with various Hong Kong and Taiwan celebrities.

After which, luggage was placed at the hotel before venturing off to Twin towers for a shopping trip. Nothing special from our own Paragon in Singapore, except its much higher.

Ended with another round of dinner at a Legend Hotel's, chinese restaurant at Jalan Putra, which was free, thus this free publicity for them

Followed by another round of swift shopping thru Chee Cheong Kai, or Chinatown in Kuala lumpur or Petaling Street.
Famous for its cheap goods and sweet tasting cooling luo han guo which is a must to drink after a warm walk in this district in Kuala Lumpur.

To add on, the stuffs inside here used to be much cheaper than other areas of Kuala Lumpur. However, seems like in the bad times, the prices have raised up. My uncle purchased a pair of slippers at RM18, you might have think "WOW its cheaper" wait til you see day 2 before you WOW again~

Kuala Lumpur Taxi tips
Taxi drivers are just like vultures, waiting to feed on their preys, thus bargaining is a must before boarding a taxi. With plenty of drivers around, always reject the 1st quotation and bargain down. Make known your "price" and stick to it. Other drivers with no or low business will approach with your "price" and that was what happened to us.

We were quoted RM$15 to be driven back to novotel, which we refuse their offer and held our stand at RM10. By walking away from the 1st batch of taxi drivers, the 2nd batch approached us and agreed to drive us back for RM10~

End of Day 1 with sore and tired legs~

To add on, salonpas aint exactly effective. My body still feels sore when i wake up in the morning.

  1. Hi Nick. I used to live in Johor bahru or JB and you as a Singaporean definitely know about this small city.

I lived there for 10 years in JB and found out that Singaporeans like to come here in Malaysia because they can buy lot of things at cheap prices due to the money exchange rates.

Now, I've been residing here in Kuala Lumpur for about 8 months. I know about these taxi 'vultures' and usually I insist them to use the meter so I can pay the right fare I deserve.

However I think the number of these kind of taxi drivers is not many and anybody should be 'smart' enough to bargain with them.

  2. Well, the pricing of JB stuffs and Singapore stuffs are closing up.

Anyway, most of the cab drivers, will not switch on the meter, or rather none will switch it on. As written, they will rather stick to their pricing.

However, not all are smart enough to bargain. They will rather get chopped by the drivers rather than , in their minds, to offend the drivers

  3. i have to agree that shopping in jb seems to be as though i am shopping in singapore. The price of clothes are close.

The only reason for me to visit jb was for food
